Director Xu Pao participated in the Global Conference on Aquaculture Millennium +20 and attended the “High-level Round-table Conference on South-South and Tripartite Cooperation to Promote Sustainable Aquaculture Development”

On September 23-24, the Global Conference on Aquaculture Millennium +20 was held in Shanghai. During the period, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China jointly organized the “High-level Round-table Conference on South-South and Tripartite Cooperation to Promote Sustainable Aquaculture Development”, to discuss how to further promote South-South and tripartite cooperation in the aquaculture sector. Director Xu Pao of FFRC led a delegation to attend the meeting and was invited to give a keynote report entitled “Chinese Sustainable Aquaculture Development and Poverty Reduction through aquaculture under the framework of South-South Cooperation” at the “High-level Round-Table Conference”.

Director Xu Pao gave a report on the characteristics and advantages of Chinese sustainable aquaculture, South-South cooperation practice of the reference center, and the prospects of South-South and tripartite cooperation, and publicized China's achievements in variety development, model promotion, and industrial layout to the world. He introduced the vivid practice of FFRC (FAO Reference Center) in promoting Chinese solutions to the world through talent training, technology transfer and demonstration projects in the past 40 years; and looked forward to the future cooperation of FFRC under the framework of “Belt and Road” and “Hand in Hand” initiative.

During the conference, ministers and ambassador-level representatives from China, Argentina, Russia, the United States, Germany, Indonesia, Thailand, Tanzania, Fiji, Ghana, Sweden, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Turkey, Uganda and other countries carried out information sharing, discussion and exchange on South-South and tripartite cooperation. At the conference, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China launched the “Initiative on Promoting South-South and Tripartite Cooperation for Sustainable Aquaculture Development”.

The Global Conference on Aquaculture is initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and is held every ten years. This year is the first time the conference has been held in China. The theme is “Aquaculture for Food Supply and Sustainable Development”.
