Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued an announcement announcing 26 new aquatic varieties that have been approved by the National Aquatic Original and Improved Breed Approval Committee. The three new aquatic varieties freshwater shrimp “Taihu No. 3”, red tilapia “Zhongheng No. 1” and snakehead “Yulong No. 1” cultivated by FFRC have passed the examination and approval, and have been promoted nationwide. So far, FFRC has cultivated 16 new aquatic varieties, which has greatly contributed to improving the coverage of improved aquatic varieties, creating the “China Core” of the aquatic seed industry and the high-quality development of the fishery industry.

The base population of the freshwater shrimp “Taihu No. 3” is the 124 kg of wild freshwater shrimp collected from the Yangtze River, Huaihe River and Pearl River in 2013. The body weight is the target trait, and the mass selection technology is used to select and breed for 5 consecutive generations. Under the same culture conditions, compared with the unselected Yangtze River freshwater shrimp, the body weight at 150 days increased by 28.7%; compared with the freshwater shrimp “Taihu No. 2”, the body weight at 150 days increased by 5.0%, of which the female shrimp weight increased by 33.3%. It is suitable for aquaculture in artificially controllable water bodies with a water temperature of 8-35 °C and a salinity of 0-6 in the country. Variety registration number: GS-01-008-2022.

The red tilapia “Zhongheng No. 1” was selected based on 2,000 individuals with pink color and no erythema and dark spots from the descendants of the red tilapia introduced from Malaysia in 2010. The body color and body weight are the target traits, and the mass selection technology was adopted to select and breed for 5 consecutive generations. The proportion of individuals with pink body surface without erythema and dark spots was 97.0%. Under the same culture conditions, compared with the unselected red tilapia population in Malaysia, the body weight at 5 months increased by 20.1%; compared with the red tilapia population in Taiwan, China, the body weight at 6 months increased by 19.1%. It is suitable for culturing in artificially controllable freshwater bodies with water temperature of 16-35 ℃ in the main breeding areas of tilapia across the country. Variety registration number: GS-01-002-2022.

The snakehead “Yulong No. 1” was selected from the 966 wild Opniocepnalus argus var Kimnra collected from the Wulong River in Sichuan in 2008. The target traits are body weight and body color, and the mass selection technology was used to select and breed for 5 consecutive generations. Under the same culture conditions, compared with the wild snakehead, the body weight at 24 month increased by 24.8%; the proportion of individuals with white body surface without dark spots and golden fin rays increased by 13.7%, accounting for 96.7%. It is suitable for aquaculture in artificially controllable freshwater bodies with the water temperature of 15-30 °C in the country. Variety registration number: GS-01-005-2022.
