On February 16, entrusted by Nanjing Yangtze Finless Porpoise Provincial Nature Reserve Management Station, under the guidance of the Yangtze River Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center mobilized 6 scientific research and monitoring vessels and professional rescue teams, together with Nanjing Yangtze Finless Porpoise Conservation, Nanjing Andover Under Water World and other units, to carry out emergency rescue for a tail injured Yangtze finless porpoise found in the waters of Qianzhou in the reserve, and safely transferred it to Nanjing Andover Under Water World for treatment and care. This action opened a precedent for the successful active rescue of injured and sick Yangtze finless porpoises in the main stream of the Yangtze River.
The injured and sick Yangtze finless porpoise received a series of treatment measures and further care at Nanjing Andover Under Water World, including wound cleaning and disinfection, routine examination and B-ultrasound examination. It is reported that the Yangtze finless porpoise is a female, about 5 years old, with a large area of ulceration on the tail, multiple lesions on the body surface and jaw, and a more serious lung infection.
The Management Station of the Reserve commissioned FFRC to coordinate the establishment of a rescue team, and based on the preliminary diagnosis, the first stage of the treatment plan was formulated. At present, the finless porpoise is generally in stable condition, and its swimming behavior is basically normal. The rescue team will formulate a follow-up treatment and care plan based on the status and related examination results of the finless porpoise, and make every effort to carry out the treatment work.
The rescue operation was strongly supported by Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Dashengguan Waterway Office of Nanjing Waterway Bureau of the Yangtze River, Nanjing Maritime Safety Bureau and other departments, and Huaihe River Basin Fishery Ecological Protection Research Center of FFRC has done a lot of work. The relevant events have been reported by CCTV, GuangMing Daily, GuangMing Network, Xinmin Evening Post, Yangtse Evening Post and other media.
