On April 11-12, in order to further reduce the effects of COVID - 19 outbreak on the freshwater shrimp (Macrobrachium nipponense) farming, to stable the production of aquatic products, Prof. Xu Pao, director of the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, led a team to Shezhu City, Jiangsu Province. They conducted face-to-face exchanges with local aquatic technology extension personnel and shrimp farming households to guide the ecological culture technology of freshwater shrimp .

In the communication, Director Xu Pao said that practicing green and ecological aquaculture will be the most important work for the development of aquaculture industry in the future, and the quality and safety of aquatic products should be taken as the top priority. This year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has promoted the implementation of the "Five Major Actions" for green and healthy aquaculture, including the action plan to reduce the amount of drug used in aquaculture. All over the country are advocating "no antibiotics", putting forward new requirements for the aquaculture industry, and implementing zero tolerance for antibiotic residues. He stressed that science and technology is the foundation of the industry, only with good seed, good water, good feed, good management, we can get good quality and good efficiency. Specific to the freshwater shrimp breeding industry, to increase the production and the quantity of market-sized shrimp per unit area is the next key work.

Shezhu Town is the core breeding area of freshwater shrimp in Liyang city. The aquaculture area of freshwater shrimp is 60 thousand mu, the main cultured species is "Taihu no.2". The whole town has established 2 demonstration bases for freshwater shrimp cultivation of over 10,000 mu and 15 demonstration bases of over 1,000 mu. The average yield per mu of freshwater shrimp cultivation is over 100 kg, and the benefit per mu is 3,000 yuan. In 2018, the output value of freshwater shrimp industry reaches 600 million yuan in Shezhu Town.
