Prof. DONG Zaijie participated in the FAO Expert Consultation

From 8th to 12th, June, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened an expert consultation meeting in the Asia-Pacific regions through a video conference for establishing the development of a global information system for farmed types of aquatic genetic resources. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Graham Mair, a senior FAO aquaculture official, and more than 30 experts from major aquaculture countries and international organizations in the Asia-Pacific regions were invited to participate. Commissioned by Fishery Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Prof. DONG Zaijie of FFRC participated the meeting as an expert in the the National Certification Committee for Aquatic Varieties of China.

There are two main topics at the meeting. One is the registration of aquaculture species in the Global Information System for Aquatic Genetic Resources; the second is the Global Action Plan for Aquatic Genetic Resources. The specific contents include: identifying the main stakeholders of the global information system for aquatic genetic resources, evaluating the registration system for aquaculture species, the further development of the registration system, the long-term regional objectives of the four priority areas of the Global Action Plan for Aquatic Genetic Resources, aquatic genetic resources Priority strategies related to the Global Action Plan and specific actions under the priority strategies.

In the meeting, Prof. DONG Zaijie have put forward some valuable suggestions for long-term goals of the registration of aquaculture species in the global information system of aquatic genetic resources and the global action plan for aquatic genetic resources based on the experience of China's aquatic primary seed system and aquatic germplasm resource platform construction, as well as China's fishery statistics projects, etc., which have been widely recognized by FAO officials and participating experts.
